TCP/IP WinSock

There are many implementations of the TCP/IP WinSock. The three most popular implementations are the Netmanage Chameleon TCP/IP WinSock, the Spry implementation, and the Trumpet WinSock. Microsoft recently released a 32-bit implementation of the TCP/IP WinSock for MS-Windows for Workgroup but it currently does not support the SLIP or PPP dial-up protocol.

Among the top three implementations, the Netmanage Chameleon TCP/IP WinSock is the most mature and most robust implementation. It is packaged with their four commercial Internet application suites. These four application suites are Chameleon NFS, Netmanage Chameleon, Internet Chameleon, and Chameleon Sampler applications suites. (Their Chameleon NFS32 application suite is for the Windows NT environment.) Netmanage makes the Chameleon Sampler available for download from their ftp site to anyone who is interested in testing their software. Chameleon Sampler can be obtain from:

ftp site: ftp.netmanage.com

directory: /pub/demos/sampler

file names: sampler.exe
              readme.txt

The Spry's TCP/IP WinSock is one of the newest implementation. It is packaged with their "Internet-In-A-Box" Internet application suit. What this package lack in road test mileage, this package make up on the abundance of sophisticated tools and well constructed user interfaces.

Although the Trumpet WinSock is a mature product, it is not as robust as the Netmanage implementation. Although most Internet applications do not have problem with the Trumpet WinSock, there are some which are not compatible with it. However, this implemenation of the TCP/IP WinSock is FREE!
